Courses for careers in sport management

In choosing a course for a career in sport, recreation or fitness management, graduates are able to work as sport administrators or manager in schools, clubs and private institutions.  They can also work as a fitness facility manager, event manager or sport team manager.  As well as this, diploma graduates also qualify with the ability to coordinate corporate wellness programmes and manage recreation facilities or work with talent identification and development programmes.

Some careers and jobs in sport management

The following gives you an idea of the types of jobs in sport management as well as the required qualifications.

Sport Agent: this person generally represents the interest of athletes with areas such as negotiation of contracts, conditions of employment, payments and methods of remuneration.  This person would require a Diploma in sport, recreation and fitness management.

  • Sport Manager: this person is responsible for areas such as event, planning and organisation, marketing, personnel management, facility management and or team management. This person would require a diploma in sport, recreation and fitness management.
  • Sport Marketingthis person is responsible for the marketing of sport events, media liaison and athlete or sport public relations.    This person would require a diploma in sport, recreation and fitness management.
  • Facility Manager, Spa Manager:  this person could run a fitness facility, manage a wellness spa or even manage an on-board spa.  Although a sport, recreation or fitness management diploma or certificate is essential, on-board spa managers are often required to be qualified fitness practitioners so a fitness certificate is a bonus and likely to ensure this job.
  • Recreation Manager:  this person could run the recreation activities in a hotel, a recreation club or a recreation facility.  A minimum of a sport, recreation and fitness management certificate would be required.
  • Sport & Recreation Officer/ Co-ordinator: is often employed by local governments/councils to lead recreational activities in local communities for the general upliftment of the community. Recreation officers could also be employed by the larger corporate businesses or hotel groups. This person would require a diploma in sport, recreation and fitness management.

    Where do sporting and fitness professionals work?  At health and fitness facilities; leisure facilities; sport specific environments; private practice; school; sport clubs; rehabilitation centres; hotel spas; luxury cruise liners.  They also work in government in administration or in recreation management with departments of sport.
